HISTORY

"How could we NOT just plunge right in!" -

Founding Member, Jean Atkinson, on the creation of
Volunteer Services for the Visually Handicapped, Inc.

Volunteer Services for the Visually Handicapped, Inc. (VSVH) was started in 1965 by a group of volunteers who learned how to braille in order to transcribe textbooks for the blind students at two local elementary schools. At the time, few brailled materials were available for visually impaired students. The group began under the name of The Transcription Center, and afterwards, under its present name.

Within a few years, they expanded their services to provide large-print and audio-tape transcriptions of textbooks. Their services were also expanded to encompass all persons who were blind, visually impaired or has learning disabilities that prevented them from reading standard print, and has remained so to the present time. Although textbooks and educational materials remain a priority, transcription requests are honored for a wide range of print materials.

The Milwaukee Public Library's Central Downtown branch was chosen as the location for VSVH and has remained so since the beginning. The VSVH Center is located adjacent to the Wisconsin Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped within Central Library.
